"My own government is the greatest purveyor of violence in the world"
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A reality check on the greatest danger ever invented and how we can avert catastrophe. Nuclear proliferation is accelerating and the threat of a hair trigger intercontinental ballistic missile launch that characterized the cold war era continues to this day. What nation poses the greatest threat to global security? Iran? China? The United States? The Bush administration is developing a new generation of nuclear weapons and has granted itself the unholy right to use them as it wishes. Isn’t the mere possession of nuclear weapons an open daily threat of mass killing? Isn’t that a form of state terrorism?

History teaches that in every era demagogues spread hateful propaganda against marginalized religious and ethnic minorities, often as a prelude to aggressive military action. Today, neocons like David Horowitz and Ann Coulter foment fear of "IslamoFascists" and the Bush Administration misleads the American people, all to justify the "War on Terror," in general, and a US invasion of Iran, in particular. Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace has assembled a panel of leading experts to examine these dangerous developments and help chart a course away from bigotry and war and toward peace and reconciliation.

Rev. Dr. James Lawson
Civil Rights Leader and Minister Emeritus of Holman United Methodist Church

Discussion Moderated by Tom and Jan Honoré: Katrina and the War
Testimonies from Katrina survivors and their allies in rebuilding the cities

New Orleans-style Jazz

"We deplore the diversion of resources from the rebuilding of New Orleans homes to the illegal and immoral wars in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Dr. Bonnie Blustein, a member of the ICUJP Board and an organizer of the program, "Big corporations are profiting from these disasters at the expense of long-time residents and immigrant workers."

The program will contrast the valor of the many "everyday heroes" who led rescue and rebuilding efforts in Louisiana and Mississippi with the negligence and inaction of federal, state, and local authorities. It will address the possibility of impeachment or other means to hold these officials accountable for their role in the disaster.

Katrina and the War will be moderated by ICUJP members and Louisiana natives Tom and Jan Honore. "We need to remember what Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior taught us," said Mr. Honore, who is a board member of ICUJP and of the Catholic peace and justice group Call To Action USA. "King said that 'When profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered."

James Lawson, a key figure in the American Civil Rights Movement, was dubbed "the leading non-violence theorist in the world" by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He has recently returned to Los Angeles after serving as a Distinguished University Professor at Vanderbilt University for the 2006-07 academic year. Lawson served as pastor of Holman United Methodist Church for 25 years before retiring in 1999.

"We as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered."
-- Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1967

Shimon Katz and Palestinian representative Ra'ed Haddar of Combatants for Peace
at ICUJP Friday Morning Meeting

Friday
24 August, 2007
Immanuel Presbyterian Church
3300 Wilshire Blvd (at Berendo, two blocks west of Vermont)
Los Angeles
directions
7:00 am

Israeli representative Shimon Katz and Palestinian representative Ra'ed Haddar of Combatants for Peace will be our special guests on Friday, August 24, 2007 at Immanuel Presbyterian Church. Please join ICUJP for this special presentation as we struggle together towards a more peaceful and just world.

The website is: http://www.combatantsforpeace.org/

WHO ARE WE?

The "Combatants for Peace" movement was started jointly by Palestinians and Israelis, who have taken an active part in the cycle of violence; Israelis as soldiers in the Israeli army (IDF) and Palestinians as part of the violent struggle for Palestinian freedom. After brandishing weapons for so many years, and having seen one another only through weapon sights, we have decided to put down our guns, and to fight for peace.

WE BELIEVE

That only by joining forces, will we be able to end the cycle of violence, the bloodshed and the occupation and oppression of the Palestinian people. We no longer believe that it is possible to resolve the conflict between the two peoples through violent means; therefore we declare that we refuse to take part any more in the mutual bloodletting. We will act only by non-violent means so that each side will come to understand the national aspirations of the other side. We see dialogue and reconciliation as the only way to act in order to terminate the Israeli occupation, to halt the settlement project and to establish a Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem, alongside the State of Israel.

WHAT ARE OUR GOALS?

* To raise the consciousness in both publics regarding the hopes and suffering of the other side, and to create partners in dialogue.

* To educate towards reconciliation and non-violent struggle in both the Israeli and Palestinian societies.

* To create political pressure on both Governments to stop the cycle of violence, end the occupation and resume a constructive dialog.

HOW DO WE OPERATE?

Since the beginning of 2005 we have been organizing meetings between Israeli and Palestinian veterans, in which both sides tell about the violent actions that they have taken part in and about the turning point which led them to understand the limits of violence. Naturally, these meetings were fraught with many fears, however we soon learned that despite years of fear and hatred, there is more that unites us than divides. Therefore we have decided to act together in the following ways:

* To continue with the combatants' meetings, which allow each side to understand the other's narrative, via the approach of reconciliation rather than conflict.

* To implement an educational lecture series in public forums on both sides (universities, youth groups, schools etc.). The lectures will be given jointly by an Israeli and a Palestinian veteran, who will concentrate on the transition from violent struggle to the recognition of the limits of violence.

* To create joint projects which educate towards non- violence.

* To create joint frameworks in order to become familiar with the culture, history and current needs of the other nation.

* To set up Bi-National media teams, which will act in order to influence public opinion in Israel, Palestine and the rest of the world.

* To participate in demonstrations and other non-violent actions against the occupation as a bi-national group.

MOVIE SYNOPSIS:

On January 23, 2002, Mariane Pearl’s world changed forever. Her husband Daniel, South Asia bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal, was researching a story on shoe bomber Richard Reid. The story drew them to Karachi where a go-between had promised access to an elusive source. As Danny left for the meeting, he told Mariane he might be late for dinner. He never returned.

In the face of death, Danny’s spirit of defiance and his unflinching belief in the power of journalism led Mariane to write about his disappearance, the intense effort to find him and his eventual murder in her memoir. Six months pregnant when the ordeal began, she was carrying a son that Danny hoped to name Adam. She wrote the book to introduce Adam to the father he would never meet. Transcending religion, race and nationality, Mariane’s courageous desire to rise above the bitterness and hatred that continues to plague this post 9/11 world, serves as the purest expression of the joy of life she and Danny shared.

You are cordially invited to a special briefing on the Bush Administration's proposed new hydrogen bomb, the so-called reliable replacement warhead. Former Assistant Secretary of Defense, the Honorable Phillip E. Coyle III will present.

The Bush Administration's FY 2008 budget is asking for $118.8 million for the design of the new hydrogen bomb. Production would begin in 2009. DOE proposes to modernize its entire nuclear weapons production capacity through its so-called "Complex" plan. Costs likely to run above $150 billion. If the reliable replacement warhead is developed many analysts believe that nuclear testing will begin anew in the US and abroad. Within the next few weeks Congress will be voting (in various committees) on this new nuclear project.

Nuclear film expert, Peter Kuran, will also show recently restored footage of US nuclear tests. Jonathan Parfrey of Physicians for Social Responsibility will moderate.

and... Billionaires for Bush

People across the nation are asking whether President Bush and Vice President Cheney have committed "High Crimes and Misdemeanors." Have Bush and Cheney abused their powers of office? ...by using information they knew to be false as justification for the U.S. invasion of Iraq; condoning and authorizing the torture of prisoners of war and rendering detainees to foreign countries know to torture; maintaining secret prisons and other detention facilities in violation of the Geneva Conventions; authorizing warrantless wiretaps on U.S. citizens; disclosing the name of an undercover CIA operative contrary to law in retaliation for her husband’s opposition to the Iraq War; and suspending and denying the historic Writ of Habeas Corpus by ordering the indefinite detention of so-called "enemy combatants" without charge and without access to legal counsel.

To explore these and other critical issues and whether Impeachment Hearings should be promptly convened, ICUJP is presenting an educational forum on June 11, 2007.

At a time of virulent religious fanaticism extending from Afghanistan to Washington, D.C., Truthdig presents two of the most courageous writers confronting this descent into modern irrationality. A nonbeliever and a believer -- one who sees religion as a scourge and one who argues that the loss of the spiritual has plunged our society into violence and extremism -- have both written passionately and profoundly about this subject and will share their thoughts in what promises to be a fascinating evening of debate and dialogue.

The People:

Sam Harris has become America's premier atheist and a prominent critic of religious influence in all its forms. His work includes the New York Times bestsellers "The End of Faith" and "Letter to a Christian Nation," and the acclaimed Truthdig essay "An Atheist Manifesto."

Chris Hedges, a former Middle East bureau chief for The New York Times and a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, spent two years researching his latest book, "American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America." The veteran journalist also writes a column for Truthdig.

Robert Scheer, a journalist with nearly 40 years of experience and the author of eight books, is the editor in chief of Truthdig. As a columnist, Scheer has frequently chronicled the collision of religion and politics around the world.

Nationally-renowned Michael "Mikey" Weinstein, founder of the <a href="http://www.military religiousfreedom .org/index.html">Military Religious Freedom Foundation presents a program and public discussion that will focus on the growing threats to the Constitution' s First Amendment guarantee of religious freedom.

Michael Weinstein is a 1977 Air Force Academy graduate and lawyer. He served the Air Force for 10 years as a JAG or military attorney and is a former White House legal adviser. His older son and daughter-in- law are Air Force Academy graduates while a younger son is a senior at the academy. "My kids were routinely reminded of the fact that they and their people were complicit in the execution of Jesus Christ while at the academy. Kids were told that the Holocaust was retribution for killing Jesus, in history class." In 2005, Weinstein launched his Military Religious Fre edom Foundation to put a stop to the proselytizing of evangelical Christians in the U.S. military.

Since the foundation's start, he says, he has received countless phone calls and e-mails from members of all branches of the military who have been targeted. His cause is best encapsulated in the title of his book: With God on Our Side: One Man's War Against an Evangelical Coup in America's Military. Weinstein will be available for questions and answers during the event and for book signing afterwards. This event is free and open to the public and sponsored by Neighborhood Church, JewsOnFirst. org and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.

Voices of a People's History of the United States is the companion volume to historian Howard Zinn’s legendary book A People’s History of the United States. For Voices, Zinn and editor Anthony Arnove selected testimonies—speeches, letters, poems, songs, petitions, and manifestos—of people throughout U.S. history who struggled against slavery, racism, war, oppression and exploitation, and who articulated a vision for a better world.

On February 1, 2007, at All Saints Church Pasadena, a talented group of actors and activists will help bring the book’s dramatic voices to life as a fundraiser for ICUJP: Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace.

This event will also be the official launch of the ongoing Los Angeles Voices Project, which will seek to bring the lessons of the book to a wide range of audiences of all ages, through free public readings at schools, museums, and libraries.

Salome Jens * Mimi Kennedy * Mitchell Ryan in:
Leipzig
A New Play by Wendy Graf

West Coast Jewish Theatre and The Group at Strasberg present Leipzig, written by Wendy Graf, directed by Deborah La Vine and starring Salome Jens, Mimi Kennedy and Mitchell Ryan. Leipzig is a touching and hopeful story about a mother (Jens) and a daughter (Kennedy) who must unlock the secrets of the past in order to embrace the future. Also featured in the cast are Shauna Bloom, Ryan Eggold, K.C. Marsh, and Paul Witten.

Wendy Graf is the award-winning writer of Lessons (which starred Hal Linden and Mare Winningham).

Mimi Kennedy, a good friend to ICUJP, is an accomplished performer in theatre, TV and Film. She is perhaps best known as Abby (Dharma’s hippie mother) on ABC’s now-syndicated hit sitcom Dharma & Greg. Her numerous theatre appearances include Jules Feiffer’s Grownups at the Mark Taper Forum, and a sold-out, one-night-only performance as Laura Bush in Tony Kushner’s Only We Who Guard The Mystery Shall Be Unhappy. She also played in The Vagina Monologues; Long Day’s Journey Into Night; How I Learned To Drive and The Sisters Rosenzweig. She was nominated by TV Critics as Best Supporting Dramatic Actress for her portrayal of Ruth Sloan in ABC’s post-WWII drama Homefront. Other series include Savannah; Three Girls Three; Stockard Channing in Just Friends; The Two Of Us; (with British comedian Peter Cook) and Spencer (with Chad Lowe). Films include Erin Brockovich; Buddy; Pump Up The Volume; and the soon-to-be-released Man In the Chair with Christopher Plummer.

Salome Jens has had a long and distinguished career on Broadway, at the Lincoln Center, and other major theatres including the Mark Taper Forum where she did Hamlet with Stacy Keach. She has appeared in many starring roles on TV, Movies of the Week and episodic series such as LA Law, Cagney and Lacy, Gunsmoke, Bonanza and Macgyver, to name just a few. She has had running parts in series such as Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman; Falcon Crest and Melrose Place. Some of her movie roles include Angel Baby; John Frankenheimer’s Seconds, with Rock Hudson; Me, Natalie; Just Between Friends; and Clan of the Cave Bear.

Deborah La Vine has directed over 200 theater productions from Alaska to the East Coast. She has earned a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle nomination, NAACP Image Award citation and thirteen Drama-Logue awards for outstanding direction in a variety of theaters. She directed the award winning production of A Streetcar Named Desire, performed in American Sign Language with voice interpretation at Deaf West Theater; the West Coast premieres of Kindertransport and A Shayna Maidel for The Tiffany Theaters; and Off The Map at the Mark Taper Forum New Works Festival.

Americans have a general idea of how many American soldiers have died in Iraq, but few know about the full medical consequences of this conflict. This conference is the first opportunity to hear from medical and other experts about the effects of the conflict on all those involved: American troops and their families, and Iraqi citizens and their families. Topics will include: modern life-saving techniques, rehabilitation services available to disabled service members, and psychological effects of war, including stresses on families of service men and women.

Epidemiologists will present information on the number of Iraqi people killed and injured, the types of injuries suffered as a result of the on-going conflicts, and the effects of war on the health and sanitation infrastructures of countries subjected to the violence of war. A special session will examine the enormous health dangers inherent in a possible US intervention in Iran. This conference is designed for health professionals and the general public.
