An Interfaith Gathering against the Culture of Torture - Sunday, Jan 19

Join us in raising righteous objection against torture. Our society’s mass incarceration, especially of poor people of color, the corruption and abuses recently made public in LA County jails, and the blatant torture that the U.S. is responsible for overseas in Guantanamo Bay are all symptoms of a society obsessed with a culture of torture. Communities of faith have an obligation to denounce this torture wherever it is found.

No U.S. Military Intervention in Syria!

September, 2013

NO U.S. MILITARY INTERVENTION IN SYRIA!
TELL CONGRESS: DO NOT APPROVE A US ATTACK ON SYRIA

As an interfaith community of religious and secular members who believe in the power of love to overcome hatred and the power of mercy to conquer vengeance, while affirming the world’s common humanity and the sacredness of human life, we urge President Obama and Congress to reject any military intervention in Syria, including any military attack, arming the rebels, or creating a no-fly zone, and instead to focus on increasing humanitarian assistance through the United Nations and building active multilateral diplomacy without preconditions with all involved parties for an immediate ceasefire, a full arms embargo, and negotiations to end Syria’s civil war.

A Faithful Witness Against Torture

The film Zero Dark Thirty has raised a great deal of concern in the human rights community primarily for its fictitious portrayal of torture having been instrumental in the capture of Osama bin Laden.  The task of communities of faith is to build a moral consensus in this country that torture is always wrong.  One week before the Academy awards, The National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) and Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace (ICUJP) will hold a program at the Hollywood United Methodist Church followed by a public witness at Hollywood and Highland, two blocks from the church. Signs will be provided. Clergy are encouraged to wear clerical attire.
