DESCRIPTION OF EVENT:
PANELISTS & REGAS AWARDEES

The first part is a high-level symposium which aims to provide an honest and searching discussion of religion’s implication in violence, war and terrorism and also its potential for both individual and societal peace. Is religion primarily responsible for the violence and conflicts our time, or is it coopted by other forces like politics, culture, race and ethnicity?

After the symposium there will be a reception held for Rev. George Regas followed by the Regas award for emerging interfaith leaders. 

List of Speakers for the “Not in God’s Name” panel :

PROF. JACK MILES is Distinguished Professor of English and Religious Studies at University of California, Irvine and General Editor of The Norton Anthology of World Religions. He won the Pulitzer Prize for God: A Biography and was the former editor of the Los Angeles Times Book Review.

PROF. NAJEEBA SYEED is Assistant Professor of Interreligious Education at the Claremont School of Theology and has chaired national conferences on Muslim and Interfaith Peacebuilding. She was trained as a mediation lawyer and named the Southern California Peacemaker of the Year.

PROF. REUVEN FIRESTONE is Professor of Medieval Judaism and Islam at the Hebrew Union College and Senior Fellow at the Center for Religion and Civic Culture at USC. He is the author of Jihad: The Origin of Holy War in Islam, and is President of the International Quranic Studies Association.

PROF. DANIEL SMITH-CHRISTOPHER is Professor of Theological Studies and Director of the Peace Studies Program at Loyola Marymount University. He is an expert on Biblical studies and the editor of the best-selling Subverting Hatred: The Challenge of Nonviolence in Religious Traditions.

PROF. RITA SHERMA is Director of the Center for Dharma Studies and Associate Professor of Dharma Studies at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley and former Swami Vivekananda Visiting Professor at USC. She is the founder of the Dharma Association of North America (DANAM) and author of Hinduism and the Divine 

PROF. JOSEPH PRABHU (Moderator) is Professor of Philosophy and Religion at California State University, Los Angeles, and recent Visiting Professor at Oxford University. He is the Co-Chair of the Southern California Committee for a Parliament of the World’s Religions (SCCPWR), and editor of The Intercultural Challenge of Raimon Panikkar .
