Fidel Sanchez and CISPES colleagues report on the El Salvador elections
In El Salvador's February 3 presidential election, Nayib Bukele, the former mayor of San Salvador, beat the two ruling party candidates - Carlos Calleja of the conservative Arena Party and Hugo Martínez of the incumbent Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front. The victory sent a decisive message to the two parties, which have held power since El Salvador’s brutal civil war in the 1980s.
"Voters appeared to be willing to gamble on a relative newcomer to confront the country’s poverty and violence, shutting out the right- and left-wing parties that have dominated Salvadoran politics for three decades" (New York Times).
ICUJP board member Fidel Sanchez and colleagues from CISPES (Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador) traveled to the country as monitors to ensure free and fair elections. Join us for a discussion on the election, its results and how it may impact the country going forward.
