June 20 is World Refugee Day.
Globally we remember the strength, courage, and resilience of millions of refugees. Sadly, here in the United States, we are detaining thousands of people who should be protected and supported from the violence and trauma they have fled. They are refugees but we treat them as criminals, imprisoning them in deplorable conditions, separating parents from their children, and denying them the basic rights to which they are entitled.
ICUJP's third "Speak Truth to Power" Justice Luncheon continues with an important conversation on Tuesday, June 20, about how we as people of faith and of conscience need to stand in solidarity with these immigrants. Let's travel together to pray and to make a visible statement at the Adelanto Immigrant Detention Center, thus creating awareness about what is happening there and about our moral responsibility to speak truth to power, welcome the stranger, pursue release for the prisoner, and care for the widow and the orphan.
