Street Symphony: Creating beloved community at the CROSSROADS

Event DescriptionA discussion and demonstration of how Street Symphony programs create new works of music from the intersection of community participants living in Skid Row shelters or SRO's and musical/performing artists.

CROSSROADS programs create new communities of audiences, combining Skid Row community participants with the public at large.

Join the conversation with our speakers:

Vijay Gupta is a violinist, speaker and collaborative artist. He currently serves as the Artistic Director of Street Symphony, an organization he founded in 2011 which provides thousands of musical experiences for people in reentry from homelessness, addiction and incarceration in Los Angeles. Gupta is also the co-founder of Skid Row Arts Alliance, which creates artistic experiences in collaboration with Skid Row arts providers. Gupta is the recipient of a 2018 MacArthur Fellowship.

Street Symphony, founded by Gupta in 2011, has provided thousands of musical experiences for people experiencing homelessness, incarceration, addiction, and poverty in Los Angeles county. Recognized as a national model for community engagement through music, Street Symphony partners with Skid Row service providers, and Los Angeles county jails to create musical experiences of the highest artistic quality, bringing together musicians from the LA Phil, Master Chorale, and countless other musical artists from a variety of genres, to create music for, and with, people living in Skid Row.
