Event Description:
Independent journalist and activist Andy Worthington and Michael Rapkin of the Guantanamo Bar will be discussing the prison at Guantanamo Bay, which recently marked the 23rd anniversary of its opening on Jan. 11, and what we can expect from it over the next four years under Donald Trump.
Join the conversation with our speakers:
Andy Worthington has been working to tell the truth about Guantanamo, and to get the prison closed, for nearly 20 years. A journalist, author and activist, he has, over the years, worked with the UN and WikiLeaks, and runs the Close Guantanamo campaign and website.
Michael Rapkin, along with his son, are senior partners in the Marina Del Rey law firm of Rapkin and Associates. He has been a real estate lawyer for 46 years and, since 2005, a member of the Guantanamo Bar. He had two clients in Guantanamo, both of whom were transferred out after undergoing torture and indefinite detention at the hands of the U.S. government. Charges were never filed against either of them.

Please join ICUJP and allies in-person at our new location in front of the Wilshire/Westwood Federal Building on Wednesday, February 5th, 2025, to mark 23 years of existence of the Guantanamo Bay prison camp and the human rights violations and torture it spawned.
At its peak, the illegal detention center at Guantanamo Bay held almost 800 men and boys of Muslim faith - most of whom were never charged with a crime. Today, 15 prisoners still languish there.
After the Guantanamo Bay prison camp was opened, the Bush Administration commissioned the torture memos, a series of documents designed to retroactively provide a pseudo-legal justification for crimes against humanity. To date no one in the Bush administration has been called to account for writing and implementing these documents, and the mainstream media has seemed to forget about what those torture documents have meant to subsequent administrations and the liberties our military and elected officials have taken in illegal detention and torture.
Let's send a message to the White House:
Close Guantanamo NOW and release all detainees!
End torture NOW and prosecute the torturers and those who authorized them.
