Back from the Brink: Local Organizing to Prevent Nuclear War

Event Description: The threat of nuclear war is real and rising. Vladimir Putin has threatened to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, tensions are rising between the United States and China, and a new global nuclear arms race is underway.

Back from the Brink: Bringing Communities together to Abolish Nuclear Weapons is mobilizing local communities throughout the country to demand that our leaders in Washington take bold action toward nuclear abolition and common sense policies that can prevent nuclear war.

Here in California, our demand can be especially impactful. California has long led the nation on important environmental and social policies and we must do so again, this time on the critical issue of nuclear weapons.

Denise Duffield is Associate Director of Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles and directs its Nuclear Threats program, which advocates for health protective policies related to nuclear weapons and nuclear energy. She serves on the steering committee of Back from the Brink: Bringing Communities Together to Abolish Nuclear Weapons and leads PSR-LA's efforts for a full cleanup of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL). Denise also serves on the board of the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability (ANA), a national network of organizations that works to address issues of nuclear weapons production and waste cleanup.
