Huwaida Arraf: The Palestinian (and Global) Intifada Against Oppression

GO TO BOTTOM OF PAGE TO RSVP

Event Description:

The Arabic word "Intifada" is often misunderstood or outright misappropriated in the West - in the region, the word means shaking off oppression.

Our speaker Huwaida Arraf will speak on the modern day legal and financial movements to shake off the bonds of confinement and violence in the open-air prison that Gaza has become.

Join the conversation with our speaker:

Huwaida Arraf
is a Palestinian American attorney and human rights activist. Over the past two decades, she has been involved in a number of legal and grassroots initiatives for Palestinian rights. In 2001, she co-founded the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a Palestinian-led non-violent resistance movement, which has twice been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2007, Huwaida helped build one of the first accredited clinical legal education programs in the Arab World at Al-Quds University in Jerusalem. She was one of the initiators and organizers of the first delegation of lawyers to enter Gaza after Operation Cast Lead (2008-2009) and co-authored the report on their findings "Onslaught: Israel's Attack on Gaza and the Rule of Law."

The International Solidarity Movement (ISM) is a Palestinian-led movement committed to resisting the long-entrenched and systematic oppression and dispossession of the Palestinian population, using non-violent, direct-action methods and principles. Founded in August 2001, ISM aims to support and strengthen the Palestinian popular resistance by being immediately alongside Palestinians in olive groves, on school runs, at demonstrations, within villages being attacked, by houses being demolished or where Palestinians are subject to consistent harassment or attacks from soldiers and settlers as well as numerous other situations.

Help Us Send Aid To Cuba!

Please join Interfaith Communities United for Justice and PeaceGlobal Health PartnersNot Just Tourists,, Pan-American Medical Association, Puentes de Amor, LA US Hands Off Cuba Committee (and its affiliates nationwide), Health Care for US - HC4US, and Operation Rainbow, Inc. as we raise funds to send medical supplies to Cuba and supply painkillers to those in need.

The main trauma hospital, Calixto Garcia, is completely out of painkillers like Ibuprofen, Tylenol, and aspirin. This dire shortage is a direct result of the US blockade and SSOT.

We appreciate any support you can give.
