Friends Committee on National Legislation : Lobbying Congress for Aid, Not Arms to the Middle East
RSVP AT BOTTOM OF PAGE
Event Description:
The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL)’s Odeliya Matter will discuss how FCNL lobbyists, along with a vast network of constituents and a nationwide coalition of organizations have spent over a year and a half advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza, increased humanitarian aid, and blocking offensive weapons to Israel.
This work has unfolded against a shifting political landscape - first under a Biden administration that prioritized accommodating select interests over the will of the majority of Americans, who sought an end to the war in Gaza and end unconditional support for Israel. Now, under a Trump administration defined by unpredictability, dangerous rhetoric endorsing ethnic cleansing, continued violence, and a blatant dismissal of human rights, the challenges have grown. Yet even in this difficult climate, opportunities for progress remain.
- We seek a world free of war and the threat of war.
- We seek a society with equity and justice for all.
- We seek a community where every person’s potential may be fulfilled.
- We seek an earth restored.

Odeliya Matter is the Program Associate on Middle East Policy at the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL). Odeliya graduated from Sapir College in Sderot, Israel, with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. In 2022, Odeliya co-founded Negev Media, an organization promoting representational and solution-based media regarding the Arab Bedouin struggle for human rights and recognition of unrecognized villages in the Negev. She has also served as the field and media coordinator for Negev Coexistence Forum for Civil Equality (NCF), an organization aiming to achieve full civil rights and equality for all residents of the Negev.
Since 2020, Odeliya has been a teaching fellow with the Forum for Regional Thinking, a think tank aiming to bring about change in the way the Israeli public perceives the Middle East, encouraging critical thought and a complex discourse about the region. Today, she lobbies Congress in the promotion of sustainable and long-sighted solutions for a Middle East deprived of just those for far too long.
