Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum 2025 "Season of Resilience"
RSVP AT BOTTOM OF PAGE FOR ZOOM LOG-IN
I'm a lifelong agitator, a radical. A rebel is just against things for rebellion's sake. By radical, I mean someone who goes to the roots. -- Will Geer
Event Description:
The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum presents its 52nd annual season of theater, music and performance.
Mainstage plays include two beloved comedies by William Shakespeare, "Much Ado About Nothing" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream"; "Strife," a rarely produced 1909 British drama by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and social activist Sir John Galsworthy; the world premiere of "The Seagull: Malibu," an evocative retelling of Anton Chekhov’s timeless masterpiece; and "Wine in the Wilderness" by celebrated writer Alice Childress - all performed in repertory on Theatricum's one-of-a-kind, outdoor wooded stage located in the heart of Topanga.
The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum has been an important chapter of the Southern California's arts scene as well as an intrinsic part of the ongoing story of activism in this country.
Founded in 1973 by actor Will Geer, one of a number of artists of the McCarthy era that were blacklisted for their beliefs, today the 299-seat outdoor amphitheatre is one of the few mid-size union houses in the L.A. area, receiving critical praise and numerous awards including the prestigious Margaret Harford Award for Sustained Excellence from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle, and the LA Weekly Career Achievement Award for Artistic Director Ellen Geer.
The theatre also hosts a range of community programs for youth, teens, and adults, including classes, field trips, and enrichment activities. The classes introduce people to Shakespearean language, theater techniques, American history, and the power of their own voices. The Theatricum Botanicum aims to empower students with confidence, critical thinking skills, and a passion for the arts, cultivating a lifelong appreciation for language, history, and art.

Since 1978, Ellen Geer has been the artistic director of The Will Geer Thatricum Botanicum, where she helped the theater develop from a Sunday afternoon workshop performing Shakespeare to a professional repertory theater company with a negotiated Actors Equity Contract. She has produced and directed well over 100 Theatricum productions, including plays by Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams, Chekhov and Thornton Wilder and Greek classics. Many of her own plays and adaptations have been performed at Theatricum as well, including last season’s Wendy’s Peter Pan; Queen Margaret’s Version of Shakespeare’s War of the Roses; Trouble the Water; An Enemy of the People; TOM (adapted from the novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”); Merlin: The Untold Story; Dracula; A Dark Cloud Came; and Dory, A Musical Portrait.
She created the Academy of the Classics for Theatricum in 1976, which now houses an intensive Shakespeare seminar, scene study classes, teen classes and the popular Youth Drama Camp. She helped develop School Days, a field trip educational program for young people now in its 30th year, which brings over 10,000 Los Angeles school children to Theatricum each spring and fall, and co-developed Classroom Enrichment, which brings actor/teachers and programs into the classroom to work with English teachers. Among her awards: A Career Achievement Award from the LA Weekly, “Best Actress” for Long Day's Journey Into Night from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle, a “Woman of the Year” award from the County of Los Angeles and special recognition from UCLA for her work in theater.
