Brave New Films: Human Stories behind the Headlines

Event Description: 

Join Interfaith Communities United for Justice & Peace for a special presentation with Brave New Films, featuring clips from several of our documentaries and a conversation about how film can expose injustice and inspire people to take action. The program will highlight Brave New Films’ work across some of today’s most urgent issues, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.

Robert Greenwald is the founder and president of Brave New Films, a nonprofit production company that produces social justice documentaries. Over more than two decades, he has directed influential films including Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism, Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers, Koch Brothers Exposed, Suppressed and Sabotaged: The Fight to Vote, and Gaza: Journalists Under Fire. Brave New Films distributes its work free of charge through social media, schools, faith communities, nonprofit partners, and public screenings, reaching tens of millions of viewers worldwide. Before founding Brave New Films, Greenwald produced or directed more than 65 films, television movies, and miniseries, including The Burning Bed. His work has earned 25 Emmy Award nominations, two Golden Globe nominations, a Peabody Award, and the American Film Institute’s Producer of the Year Award.

Andres Useche - Film Director/Director of Immigrant Rights Campaign 

Andres Useche is an award-winning writer-director, producer, and songwriter, Andrés Useche has fought for equity and immigrant rights, collaborating with non-profits across the country and speaking and performing at the Obama White House, Capitol Hill, and Democratic presidential inaugural galas. He has directed Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Emmy winning talents. He based his first film on an award-winning graphic novel he created in his teens. Andrés got his start when his first political cartoon was published in a Colombian newspaper when he was 11 years old.



Ashleigh Di Tonto is an award-winning filmmaker and unscripted television executive with nearly 20 years of experience developing stories that sit at the intersection of entertainment, culture, and social impact. Most recently, she served as SVP of Development at Trailblazer Studios, where she developed, sold, and executive produced The Legacy of Black Wall Street for OWN and Rise Again: Tulsa and the Red Summer for National Geographic. Both documentaries were nominated for NAACP Image Awards in 2021, with Legacy also earning a Silver Anthem Award for Human & Civil Rights Film/TV. Over the course of her career, Ashleigh has developed and sold projects across a wide range of networks including CMT, ABC Family, The Weather Channel, and ITV, with credits including Win Lose or Pawn, Dancing Fools, So You Think You’d Survive, and Strangers on a Train. She also spent nearly a decade on the network side at E! Entertainment and TLC, where she helped develop hit franchises such as Cake Boss and My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

25 Years of ICUJP

In the Akan language of Ghana, Sankofa means literally "go back and get it". It is a powerful symbol that represents the need to reflect on the past to build a successful future.

As Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace celebrates 25 years of action and advocacy for a kinder and more just world, we want to remember those that were on this journey from the start - the people that came together just after the horrors of September 11th, 2001, and saw that the faith and activist communities needed to speak with one voice, and say that Religious Communities Must Stop Blessing War and Violence.

We hope that you will join us on Sunday, September 27th, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, as we look back to our founding, look forward to the task ahead, and honor courageo peacemakers who keep our struggle for justice and peace alive.

This year, Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace is commemorating 25 years of advocacy for the disenfranchised and abused at home and around the world. In the aftermath of September 11th 2001, Los Angeles religious and secular leaders and activists came together to seek an alternative to the fear mongering and vengefulness sweeping much of our nation. ICUJP declared that  “Religious Communities Must Stop Blessing War and Violence.”

We have endured and spread our message through very trying times - five Presidents, four California Governors, and numerous crises and challenges that would shake the resolve of even the most devout and dedicated group of activists. But through it all, we have held true to our mission to be the voice for "the least of these."  We are determined to create the change we want to see in the world, no matter how daunting the opposition can seem. 

Like many nonprofits, the economy, the aftereffects of the Covid pandemic, and the constant attacks on progressive organizations by the Trump administration have affected our fundraising.  We depend on the support of people who believe in justice and peace, who attend our weekly Zoom forums, who go to our events, or who receive the information on our website and social media.

We would be honored if you can donate $25, $50, $100 (or more) to help us keep up with the increasing costs of securing live venues, renting audio and video equipment, printing valuable information for live events, bringing our social media tools up to date, and paying our small but mighty part-time staff.We have several ways for you to support our work:
