Demilitarizing Police in California and
Los Angeles:
A Primer for Activists
RSVP AT BOTTOM OF PAGE
Event Description:
What can be done to rein in such militarized policing? John Lindsay-Poland of American Friends Service Committee will discuss a state law, AB481, that requires transparency and accountability for the military equipment used by law enforcement and how communities can use the law and make themselves heard. He will be joined by local activists focused on these issues in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
California Assembly Bill 481 (AB 481) is a law that went into effect in 2022 requiring California law enforcement agencies to publish information about military equipment used in policing and carceral facilities. AB 481 also requires the local governing body to approve the acquisition, use and policies of the military equipment.
AB 481 also requires a community meeting, providing transparency and an opportunity to push back on the widespread use of military gear by local law enforcement, which has been disproportionately been used against Black and Brown people and already marginalized neighborhoods.
Join us to learn more about AB 481 and how to use the law to advocate for more transparency and accountability of militarized law enforcement in our own communities.
Join the conversation with our speakers:Carolina Goodman is the Chair of the Committee on Criminal Justice Reform for the League of Women Voters of Greater Los Angeles
John Lindsay-Poland co-directs the California Healing Justice program of AFSC and co-authored the "Care First, Jails Last resolution" adopted by Alameda County.
He has written about, researched and organized action for human rights and demilitarization of U.S. policy, especially in Latin America, for more than 30 years. He left his studies at Harvard University to participate in international disarmament organizing and to accompany Central Americans threatened with political violence.

We will be recognizing the icons of social justice that were integral in founding ICUJP 23 years ago: Reverend James Lawson, Dr. Maher Hathout, Rabbi Leonard Beerman, and Rev. George Regas. We will also be honoring the current generation of leaders calling for justice and peace, including Hedab Tarifi and Tahil Sharma.
Stay tuned for more details on this great event!
Only days after the devastating 9/11 attacks, the late Rev. George F. Regas brought together Christians, Jews, Muslims, Quakers, humanists and people of many faiths and beliefs to establish Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace, with the mission that Religious Communities Must Stop Blessing War and Violence.
Since its founding 22 years ago, ICUJP has remained true to George's vision, holding over 1,000 Friday Forums with speakers from all over the world, and engaging in a wide range of activities to advance the struggle for justice and peace.
The event is free, but we would appreciate voluntary donations of $25, $50 or $100 per person. See below regarding Sponsorship packages.
