When The Community Defends Its Neighbors
RSVP AT BOTTOM OF PAGE
Event Description:
What has happened to us in this country? If we study our own history, we find that we have always been ready to receive the unfortunate from other countries, and though this may seem a generous gesture on our part, we have profited a thousand fold by what they have brought us. -- Eleanor Roosevelt
As the administration ramps up distractions from its own lawlessness, the community has stepped up to support and protect its undocumented and immigrant brothers and sisters. We will hear from groups that have banded together to push back on the assault on our undocumented neighbors, and how we can support and be involved in these actions.
Join the conversation with our speakers:
Jack B. is a long-time community organizer with the Democratic Socialists of America, Los Angeles Chapter.
Palmira Figueroa is an advocate leader, political and social justice strategist, communications and fundraising expert, and proud Mexican immigrant. She currently serves as the Communications Director at the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), where she follows her passion for contributing to social justice and uplifting her beloved immigrant community. With years of experience at the intersection of advocacy, media, and movement-building, Palmira uses strategic storytelling and communications to amplify the voices of day laborers and immigrant workers across the country. Her work is rooted in love for her community and a deep belief in the power of collective action to drive systemic change.

Join Us In Fighting Back To Save Our Democracy
Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace has been working to end the fearmongering and vengefulness sweeping much of our nation since shortly after September 11th, 2001. When great activists and civic leaders such as Rev. James Lawson, Rabbi Leonard Beerman, Dr. Maher Hathout and many others came together under the vision of Rev. George Regas, the idea that “religious communities must stop blessing war and violence” was considered extreme and confrontational.
Today, there is a new benchmark for being extreme and confrontational - our government and its leaders are actively working towards creating a Fascist America, with the benefit of weak and ineffective push back from the opposition. Every day brings a new political scandal, a new attack on democratic norms, a new reason to panic and just give up.
But through all of it, one thing keeps us steady: our nation has seen much worse, and we will trumph again.
We have endured and spead our message through very trying times - five Presidents, four California Governors, and numerous crises and issues that would shake the resolve of even the most devout and dedicated of activists. But through it all, we go forward in our mission to be the voice for "the least of these", and our determination to create the change we want to see in the world, no matter how vocal and effective the opposition can seem.
For 23 years we have worked for justice and peace, and we don't plan on stopping anytime soon. As our chairperson Steve Rohde says, we are built for this, and we are in this work for the long term.
Recently, Steve Rohde presented a forum to ICUJP members that you can see here - How Trump, Congress, & the Supreme Court are Installing an Imperial Presidency:
How Trump, Congress, & the Supreme Court are Installing an Imperial Presidency
In this forum, Steve gave an impassioned plea for all of us to do the work must do to save our democracy from tyranny:
