We’re not in Kansas Any More Toto!! But Where Are We? The Southern Baptist Schism

The history and functioning of Southern Baptists is somewhat unique among American Protestantism. Southern Baptists are not a denomination in the strict sense of the word, but surely act as one. This loose confederation of similar minded churches had, until recently, covered a wide spectrum theologically, from far left to far right. The middle ground was the common mission of sharing the Gospel. Since Moral Majority’s dawn, the tent continues to shrink, marked this year by ejecting any church from the tent who had the audacity to ordain women as clergy. It is a much smaller tent. Craig Loscalzo will address this shrinking in light of ICUJP's focus that Religious Communities Must Stop Blessing War and Violence, and place under that rubric, any form of morally questionable action that would limit the embrace of human dignity and human right.

Craig Loscalzo, Ph.D.
was the senior pastor of Immanuel Church, Lexington, Kentucky, where he served for fifteen years. He came to this pastorate after eight years of teaching ministry at The Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He has served numerous churches and institutions throughout the country as pastor, visitation minister, and interim pastor.

Currently, as the Spiritual Care Partner for Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, he connects with people who may be going through tough times, meeting them where they’re at in their spiritual journey. The goal of the Spiritual Care is to provide nondenominational support for people with significant change in their lives.

Craig and his wife Aunchalee have lived in Lexington, Kentucky since 1996. They have two grown children and four grandchildren.
