The William Grant Still Arts Center - Fun and Games: The 42nd Annual Black Doll Show

Join us for a discussion on the history of The William Grant Still Arts Center in Los Angeles, and a preview of this year's annual exhibition featuring dolls, games, quilts and multi-media art.

Join the conversation with our speaker:

Amitis Motevalli is the director of the William Grant Still Arts Center, a multi-arts exhibition and educational space focusing on community histories and broadening canons through the arts. The William Grant Still Arts Center is a facility of the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs. Amitis is also a multimedia artist born in Iran. Within her practice as an artist, she explores the culture and survival of people living in poverty, conflict and/or war. Her experience as a trans-national migrant is foundational in her work. Motevalli is invested in research, collaboration, and the potential of art to expand thought.

As the director of the William Grant Still Arts Center, Motevalli has broadened the pedagogical and exhibition programming by bringing a focus to grassroots archives, in particular within South Central Los Angeles. She also directed a city wide program called LA/Islam Arts Inititative in partnership with the Doris Duke Foundation. Motevalli is now also responsible for the upcoming Charmette Bonpua Art and Cultural Center, a satellite space to the William Grant Still Arts Center, with a specific arts focus on exhibition, education and a repository of South Central Los Angeles Archives. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles exhibiting art internationally.
