Friday Forum: ICUJP Holiday Gathering and Call for Ukraine/Russia Christmas Truce

In December 1914, small pockets of French, German, Belgian and British troops held impromptu cease-fires across the Western Front, with reports of some on the Eastern Front as well. Some accounts suggest a few of these unofficial truces remained in effect for days. These troops honored each other's humanity when the leaders of their countries just wanted to wage war.

We are honored to host Medea Benjamin from Code Pink, who will be talking about the call for a Christmas Truce in Ukraine as well as observations highlighted in her new book
War in Ukraine: Making Sense of a Senseless Conflict, and we will have reflections from other ICUJP presenters sharing their thoughts on the past year, their work, and ways that we in ICUJP can be of service in creating a more peaceful and just world in the upcoming year and beyond.

Join the conversation with our speaker:

Medea Benjamin is an American political activist who was the co-founder of Code Pink with Jodie Evans and others. Along with activist and author Kevin Danaher, she created the fair trade advocacy group Global Exchange. Benjamin was the Green Party candidate in California in 2000 for the United States Senate, receiving the highest raw vote total of any Green Party U.S. Senate candidate.

As part of Code Pink's mission, Benjamin helped organize many International Women's Day Marches and Mother's Day Calls for Peace, the latter to bring back the original intent of Mother's Day as women mobilizing against war. These included bringing women from war-torn countries such as Iraq, Palestine, and Afghanistan to the U.S. to speak about their experiences. Between 2003 and 2010, Benjamin helped organize anti-war mass mobilizations in Washington, D.C., New York City, and San Francisco.

Benjamin organized the campaign Bring Our War Dollars Home, which fought to divert money from the Pentagon into social programs at home.
