30 Years Teaching in Watts and Compton
What can we learn from the lessons that many students in Watts and Compton taught their teacher? And what lessons developed there could be used by teachers and their advocates in other working class environments? When children feel powerless, and when some among them feel that acting out and disrupting their classrooms is their only means to feel empowered, how can we heal them with hope and the knowledge of other paths?
Carolfrances Likins taught elementary school for about three decades, mostly in Compton and Watts, where she sometimes was supported by the administrations, sometime strongly opposed by them, as she strove to be a catalyst to her students discovering what their cultures have in common with those of others. She will share stories of her lessons and their learnings.

Here's how to join the online meeting:
To join by video conference, you'll need to download the Zoom app on your computer or mobile device. Click on the link to join the meeting and then enter the Meeting ID number and passcode. You'll be able to see slides and video, as well as speakers and other attendees.
If you prefer to join by phone, you'll be prompted to enter the Meeting ID number and passcode. You won't be able to see the visuals or attendees, but you can view them on the meeting video recording afterward.
If you're new to Zoom and would like to use the video option, we recommend you download the app well ahead of time.
