What’s Behind The Crisis in Haiti?

We are black, it is true, but tell us, gentle men, you who are so judicious, what is the law that says that the black man must belong to and be the property of the white man?

-- Toussaint L'Ouverture, Letter to the General Assembly (1792)

Event Description:

The crisis in Haiti is no accident. Its roots lie in the United States’ centuries-old assault on Haitian sovereignty. Speakers will give a brief history of the first Black Republic from its origins in the defeat of French colonialism to the present.

Decades of US/foreign intervention and plunder has
produced the current crisis of death squad violence, internal displacement, starvation and fleeing
refugees.

Join the conversation with our speakers:

Haiti Action Committee. She has spent decades doing international solidarity work and is co-author of
the 2019 National Lawyers Guild investigative report: The Lasalin Massacre and the Human Rights Crisis
in Haiti.

Judith is a co-chair of the International Committee of the National Lawyers Guild and former president of its San Francisco/Bay Area Chapter. She is President of the “Comfort Women” Justice Coalition.

Leslie Mullin

political prisoner. She is a member of Haiti Action Committee and a former editor of its journal Haiti
Solidarity. Leslie has authored numerous articles about Haiti with a focus on women and food sovereignty.
