Challenges to Democracy from Right-wing Nationalists, Populist and Strongman Movements
Description: A PowerPoint presentation will provide an overview of Trump’s six years, including his campaign for president in 2016, his presidency for four years, his loss of the Nov. 2020 election, and the ongoing “Big Lie” that he won. The presentation will also touch on Trump's many Russian ties - including Putin- his love of dictators, and his view of democracy as weak. We will discuss how Trump's increasing appeals to white racism and his efforts to stay in power via several coup attempts which culminated in the Jan. 6 capitol insurrection, two impeachments, and his ongoing hold on the Republican Party (demanding total one-way loyalty). Many investigations have been made into his finances and possibly criminal actions. However, now that Trump has had to leave office his stated desire is to run for president again in 2024. Finally, we will discuss how Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and the resulting targeting of civilians and wholesale carnage to the country may be forcing some Republicans to re-examine their support for right-wing nationalist and populist strongman dictators, like Putin and Trump even as right-wing strongman trends are occurring in many other countries today.
